NHS Overtime Pay Rates 2023/2024

If you are employed full-time in the NHS, you are eligible for NHS overtime rates. Full-time employment is defined as working 37.5 hours per week. Any hours worked beyond the standard 37.5 hours will be compensated at a rate of one and a half times your regular hourly wage. On Bank Holidays, the overtime rate increases to double your standard hourly rate.

Please note that these calculations are based on gross earnings per hour for the 2023/2024 financial year. They do not take into account deductions for Tax, Pension, or National Insurance. The hourly rates are derived from a full-time salary that incorporates the NHS Payrise proposed in March 2023.

In certain cases, individuals may choose not to receive payment for overtime and instead opt for
Time Off In Lieu (TOIL). TOIL allows employees to take time off equivalent to the hours worked
as overtime, subject to the discretion and permission of their manager.

It's important to note that NHS overtime rates are applicable only to staff members working
within the Band 2 to 7 levels. Employees at the 8A level and above generally do not qualify for
overtime payments, whether it involves additional hours or work on Bank Holidays. However,
there may be exceptions for certain 8A clinicians who are granted the ability to claim overtime.
